How To Use Wallpaper In Your House

Growing up my grandmother’s family room used to be decorated in a silver foil wallpaper. As kids, my siblings and I would stand in front of the walls and watch our mutated reflections as if we were in a fun house. Wallpaper can transform a space, creating a portal into a fantasy or other world.

We chose the blue, grounded Sister Parish paper, shown above, inside this recessed bed nook, to create a sense of depth. The rest of the room is covered in the same print but on a white background. The subtle contrast creates interest and plays on the architecture of the room.

Above we used this Lewis and Wood wallpaper in a long foyer hallway in our Greenwhich Village apartment project. We wanted to create the feeling of walking into the calm, English countryside after escaping the busy streets of Manhattan.
In the powder room above we used a Forsanetti paper. My client loved how taboo it felt to have an audience watching in the washroom.
Conversational patterns, like the one above by Edwina White, encourage engagement and interpretation. It’s always fun to push boundaries– expecially in a guest bathroom–and give people something to talk about.
